Since graduating from Shenandoah Conservatory in 2016, Alexander Bernstein has forged an impressive career as a young artist. His solo recitals have been received to great acclaim in the United States, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Romania. Bernstein has fiercely performed in many competitions, winning second prize and the RTE Lyric FM Special Prize at the 2015 Dublin International Piano Competition, third prize in the 2015 Verona International Piano Competition, third prize in the 2015 Gian Battista Viotti International Piano Competition and first prize in the 2011 Irish Freemasons Young Musician of the Year Competition.

MEET THE ARTIST

ALEXANDER BERNSTEIN, a San Francisco native, began piano lessons at age seven, later moving to Walla Walla, Washington, where he studied for nine years. Bernstein received a bachelor’s degree in music from Harvard University in 2010 where he studied privately with both Patricia Zander and Stephen Drury of the New England Conservatory. Under the tutelage of John O’Conor he completed a master’s degree in piano performance at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, an Artist Diploma at Shenandoah Conservatory, and finally earned his doctorate from the Royal Irish Academy of Music and Trinity College Dublin in June 2020.

After making his symphonic debut in 1999, Bernstein has performed concerti with orchestras in the United States and Europe, including the RTE National Symphony Orchestra in Ireland, the Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice in Italy, and the Pitest Symphony Orchestra in Romania, among others. He has given solo recitals in sixteen countries.

Bernstein is an avid devotee of new music, studying and premiering works of living composers, as well as Berio, Ligeti, Ives and Cage. In September 2015 he recorded a solo CD of works by the Irish composer Ryan Molloy.

Bernstein has had much success in competitions, recently winning 2nd prize in the 2018 ClaviCologne International Competition in Germany, 2nd prize and the RTE Lyric Fm Special Prize in the 2015 Dublin International Piano Competition, 3rd prize in the 2015 Verona International Piano Competition, and 3rd prize in the 2015 Gian Battista Viotti International Piano Competition. He also received 1st prize in the 2011 Irish Freemasons Young Musician of the Year Competition.

Bernstein is currently a visiting instructor of piano and music performance at Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.

Students from the International Music Academy in Liechtenstein, including violinist Tetiana Lutsyk, cellist Alfredo Ferre and pianist Alexander Gadjiev, present a special concert in collaboration with Shenandoah Conservatory. Performance highlights include selections from Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 2 in C Minor, op. 66, Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E-flat Major, op. 70 No. 2 and more.

MEET THE ARTISTS

Tetiana LutsykTetiana Lutsyk was born in Kolomyya (Ukraine) in 1994, and received her first violin lessons at the age of six. From 2006 to 2008, she was taught by professor Sergey Evdokimov at the specialist music boarding school in Charkiw, and from 2008 to 2012 she was taught by professor Mariya Futorska at the Solomiya Krushelnytska specialist music boarding school in Lviv. She is currently studying with professor Leonid Sorokow at the Academy of Music in Zagreb.

She has attended several masterclasses with Dora Schwarzberg, Maria Milstein, Boris Brovtsyn, Sven Arne Tepl and Kees Koelmans, amongst others, and also with members of the Cuarteto Casals, the Alban Berg Quartet and the Juilliard String Quartet. She also gained further musical input from a masterclass with professor Oleh Krysa, who teaches at the Eastman School of Music Conservatory in Rochester, New York. Tetiana Lutsyk receives a scholarship from the International Academy of Music in Liechtenstein, and participates in the intensive music weeks held there.

The young musician has already won several prizes at national and international competitions, including the first prize at the international Young Virtuoso competition in Croatia in 2013, the third prize at the international Francesco Geminiani competition in Italy in 2014, first prize at the international Bistricki zvukolik competition in Croatia in 2015, and the third prize at the Luigi Zanuccoli international violin competition in Italy in 2016.

Lutsyk has performed as a soloist with the chamber orchestra of the Solomiya Krushelnytska specialist music boarding school in Belgium, France, Poland and at home in Ukraine. In 2012, she performed Alexander Glasunov’s violin concerto with the Lviv Philharmonic Orchestra. During the first year of her studies, she gave a very accomplished performance of Jean Sibelius’ violin concerto with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, which led to her being given a part-time job with the orchestra shortly afterwards. She is currently a member of the ENSEMBLE ESPERANZA, which is made up of scholarship holders from the International Academy of Music in Liechtenstein, and will be performing at the FESTIVAL NEXT GENERATION in Bad Ragaz. She also plays in various chamber music ensembles, with which she regularly takes part in concerts and competitions.

Tetiana Lutsyk has received scholarships from Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland and from the International Summer Academy of the mdw – the University of Music and the Performing Arts Vienna.

Alfredo FerreHis creativity, the seriousness and respect with which he faces each work and his great musical intuition, make Alfredo Ferre an exceptional figure among the most outstanding current young musicians.

Winner of the first prize and four special prizes in the Antonio Janigro International Competition in Zagreb in 2016, Alfredo Ferre has performed as a soloist in some of the most important venues on the international scene, such as the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, National Auditorium V. Lisinski in Zagreb, KKL in Luzerna, St.Petersburg Shostakovich Hall, National Auditorium in Dominican Republic, or ADDA in Alicante, with orchestras such as the Zagreb Soloists, Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga, Croatian Radio and Television Symphonic Orchestra, Lüneburg Bachorkester, Orquesta de la Escuela Reina Sofia, etc., under conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Juanjo Mena, Gordan Nikolic, Pablo Gonzalez or Günter Pichler.

He has participated in festivals such as Kronberg in Germany, Gstaad Menuhin Festival, Santander Meeting, or the prestigious Verbier festival, where in 2017 he received the Jean-Nicholas Firmenich prize. He receives a scholarship from the International Academy of Music in Liechtenstein and participate regularly in the activities offered by the academy.

A passionate about chamber music, he has a duo with Canadian pianist Alice Burla, and has collaborated with artists such as Mischa Maisky, Claudio Martínez-Mehner, Sol Gabetta, Ettore Causa, Ivan Monighetti and more.

Born in Elda (Spain), he began his studies with Francisco Pastor and Rafael Jeziersky; later he moved to Madrid to study at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía with Natalia Shakhovskaya and Michal Dmochowsky, continuing his studies with Ivan Monighetti and Sol Gabetta. He currently studies in the class of Claudio Martinez-Mehner and Anton Kernjak.

Besides his career as a performer, Ferre tries to capture his own ideas with composition, improvisation and electronic music production. With the aim of express himself with as many different sounds as possible, he dedicates part of his time self-learning another instruments.

Alexander GadjievMusical exposure and Central European culture: Alexander Gadjiev owes the first to his family, with both parents being piano teachers and musicians, and the second to Gorizia — his city of origin — a natural crossroads of peoples, cultures and languages. These factors have both had a determining influence on his natural ability to absorb, process and rework, to his own taste, different musical styles and languages. Tutored by his father, a well-known Russian teacher, Alexander played for the first time with an orchestra at the age of nine, and held his first solo recital aged ten. He was awarded his diploma at the age of seventeen, with the highest marks and honours. This allowed him to participate in the Premio Venezia – a competition reserved for the best young talent in Italy – and win the 30th edition of the award. The numerous recitals of the Premio Venezia allowed him to perform throughout Italy and abroad (London, Paris, Madrid, Dublin).

December 2015 marked a turning point in his international career. At the ninth Hamamatsu International Piano Competition – one of the ten most prestigious piano competitions in the world – the jury, which included Martha Argerich, Akiko Ebi and Sergey Babayan, among others, awarded him first prize. His performances enchanted Hamamatsu, and he also won the audience prize. Since then, Gadjiev has been regularly invited to perform in Japan and at major piano festivals, including the Verbier Festival, the MiTo Festival in Turin, the Chopin Festival in Duszniki, the ClaviCologne International Piano Festival in Düsseldorf, Piano Festival Rafael Orozco in Cordoba, the Ljubljana Festival, Bologna Festival, Settimane Musicali for the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, the Festival Animato de Paris, Ravenna Musica, and the Kammermusik Salzburg Festival.

In October 2018, he is reaffirmed at international level with his victory at the 2018 Monte-Carlo World Piano Masters Competition, an elite showcase reserved only for pianists who have already won other prizes, held every three years in the famous Salle Garnier in Monte Carlo. The jury, chaired by Phillippe Entremont, awarded him the Prix Prince Rainier III, and with it numerous concerts in France and Europe. Alexander has played in some of the most important opera houses and concert halls (Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Regio in Turin, Teatro Alighieri in Ravenna, Kioi Hall and Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo, Kitara Concert Hall in Sapporo, Hyogo Performing Arts Center in Osaka, Salle Cortot in Paris, the Moscow Conservatory, and then in Salt Lake City, Istanbul, Barcelona, Rome, Milan, etc.) and with internationally famous orchestras such as Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, Orchestra Sinfonica del Teatro della Fenice, I Virtuosi Italiani, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the Pomeranian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, and the Mitteleuropa Orchestra. He has also worked with some of the most famous conductors on an international level: Yuri Temirkanov, Marek Pijarowski, Ken Takaseki, Anton Nanut, Tatuya Shimono, Tomomi Nishimoto, Christopher Franklin, Marco Guidarini, Olivier Ochanin, En Shao, Ulrich Windfuhr, Giedre Šlekyte, Gianluca Martinenghi, and Tiziano Severini. He has recorded for Suonare News, ALM Records Japan, while his concerts have been broadcast by Rai Radio3, Rai3, Radio Vaticana, Radio Classica, ORF, RTV Slovenija and Radio Koper. His next CD, Literary Fantasies, will be released in September by the label ACOUSENCE RECORDS and will contain works of Schumann and Liszt. He is currently studying with Pavel Gililov at Mozarteum Salzburg and participating in prestigious masterclasses such as the Eppan Piano Academy and Verbier Piano Academy, both limited to a very small number of selected pianists from around the world.

Anne-Marie McDermott is “a pianist who balances qualities of excitement and spontaneity with clarity and elegance” (The New York Times). A consummate artist balancing a versatile career as a soloist and collaborator, McDermott performs in an array of solo recitals and music festivals, as well as concerti and chamber music performances on stages throughout the United States. She has recorded works by Prokofiev and Gershwin, as well as the highly acclaimed Bach English Suites and Partitas, named Editor’s Choice by Gramophone magazine.

MEET THE ARTIST

Pianist Anne-Marie McDermott is a consummate artist who balances a versatile career as a soloist and collaborator. She performs more than 100 concerts a year in a combination of solo recitals, concerti and chamber music. Her repertoire choices are eclectic, spanning from Bach and Haydn to Prokofiev and Scriabin to Kernis, Hartke, Tower and Wuorinen.

With more than 50 concerti in her repertoire, McDermott has performed with many leading orchestra including the New York Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Seattle Symphony, National Symphony, Houston Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Moscow Virtuosi, Hong Kong Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony, New Jersey Symphony and Baltimore Symphony among others. McDermott has toured with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Moscow Virtuosi.

In the recent seasons, McDermott performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, North Carolina Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Huntsville Symphony, Alabama Symphony, San Diego Symphony, the Oregon Mozart Players, and the New Century Chamber Orchestra.

Recital engagements have included the 92nd Street Y, Alice Tully Hall, Town Hall, The Schubert Club, Kennedy Center, as well as universities across the country. Anne-Marie McDermott has curated and performed in a number of intense projects including the complete Prokofiev piano sonatas and chamber music, a three concert series of Shostakovich chamber music, as well as a recital series of Haydn and Beethoven piano sonatas. Most recently, she commissioned works of Charles Wuorinen and Clarice Assad which were premiered in May 2009 at Town Hall, in conjunction with Bach’s Goldberg Variations.

As a soloist, McDermott has recorded the complete Prokofiev Piano Sonatas, Bach English Suites and Partitas (which was named Gramophone Magazine’s Editor’s Choice), and most recently, Gershwin Complete Works for Piano and Orchestra with the Dallas Symphony and Justin Brown.

In addition to her many achievements, Anne-Marie McDermott has been named the artistic director of the famed Vail Valley Music Festival in Colorado, which hosts the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Dallas Symphony in addition to presenting more than 40 chamber music concerts throughout the summer. She is also artistic director of two new festivals: the Ocean Reef Chamber Music Festival and the Avila Chamber Music Celebration in Curacao.

As a chamber music performer, Anne-Marie McDermott was named an artist member of the Chamber Music Society (CMS) of Lincoln Center in 1995 and performs and tours extensively with CMS each season. She continues a long standing collaboration with the highly acclaimed violinist, Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg. As a duo, they have released a CD titled Live on the NSS label and plan to release the Complete Brahms Violin and Piano Sonatas in the future. McDermott is also a member of the renowned piano quartet, Opus One, with colleagues Ida Kavafian, Steven Tenenbom and Peter Wiley.

She continues to perform each season with her sisters, Maureen McDermott and Kerry McDermott in the McDermott Trio. McDermott has also released an all Schumann CD with violist Paul Neubauer, as well as the Complete Chamber Music of Debussy with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

McDermott studied at the Manhattan School of Music with Dalmo Carra, Constance Keene and John Browning. She was a winner of the Young Concert Artists auditions and was awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant.

McDermott regularly performs at festivals across the United States including Spoleto, Mainly Mozart, Sante Fe, La Jolla Summerfest, Mostly Mozart, Newport, Caramoor, Bravo, Chamber Music Northwest, Aspen, Music from Angelfire, and the Festival Casals in Puerto Rico, among others.

WORLD OF THE PIANO

Recognized as one of the world’s premier Beethoven interpreters, Shenandoah Conservatory Distinguished Artist-in-Residence John O’Conor celebrates Beethoven’s 250th birthday anniversary with a special performance of the composer’s last three sonatas. The native Dubliner was unanimously awarded first prize at the 1973 International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna, launching a virtuosic and global career where he is now acknowledged, “…as one of the greatest pianists of our time, and his expressive touch has lost nothing of the perfection that first launched him to fame over 40 years ago” (Madison Magazine).

Irish pianist John O’Conor has been gathering wonderful reviews for his masterly playing for more than forty years. Having studied in his native Dublin, in Vienna with Dieter Weber and being tutored by the legendary Wilhelm Kempff his unanimous 1st prize at the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna in 1973 opened the door to a career that has brought him all around the world.

His recordings of the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas led CD Review to say that he, “by now should be recognised as the world’s premier Beethoven interpreter” and his recent recordings of the complete Beethoven Piano Concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra and Andreas Delfs have also been greeted with acclaim. In the past year he has released two new CDs on the Steinway label, one of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations and the other of five Haydn Sonatas.

A Steinway Artist, he is chair of the keyboard division at Shenandoah University in Virginia, professor of piano at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, international visiting artist at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and visiting professor at Showa University in Japan.

For his services to music he has been decorated Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government, awarded the Ehrenkreuz fur Wissenschaft und Kunst by the Austrian Government, the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan, and has received many other awards.

MEET THE ARTISTS

Throughout his career, Mark Kellogg has embraced a wide range of musical roles as a performer, teacher and administrator. Whether it’s taken the form of appearing as a concerto soloist, playing in a variety of chamber ensembles, performing as an orchestral musician or as a jazz player, teaching students of all ages or overseeing artistic programs or festivals, he has been most fortunate to experience a rich array of musical opportunities. In addition to holding the position of associate professor of trombone, euphonium and brass chamber music at the Eastman School of Music, Kellogg is an affiliate faculty member in the school’s departments of Jazz and Contemporary Media and Music Teaching and Learning. Co-director of the Eastman Trombone Choir, he also serves as director for the school’s community engagement program, Eastman To Go.

Inspired by his son’s experiences as a young actor, Kellogg initiated a course under the auspices of the Eastman School’s Arts Leadership Program in 2014 called Parallels Between Acting and Musical Performance. This annual class seeks to identify the commonalities between these two art forms and is team-taught with two professional actors and arts educators, Skip Greer and Robert Rutland.

Kellogg recently concluded a twenty-eight year tenure as a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO). He occupied the Austin Hildebrandt principal trombone position and appeared as soloist with the RPO on many occasions, performing the concerti of Tomasi, Albrechtsberger, Larsson, Schilkret and Jeff Tyzik (commissioned by the RPO in celebration of the orchestra’s 80th anniversary), works by Elliott Carter and Fred Sturm and numerous jazz and euphonium solos on the orchestra’s pops series. Prior to his appointment in the Rochester Philharmonic, Kellogg performed as a member of the San Francisco Symphony and the National Repertory Orchestra. In recent seasons, he has played with the Oregon Symphony, the Florida Orchestra, the Charleston Symphony, the Naples Philharmonic and Symphoria.

Kellogg has been a frequent guest with the Eastman Wind Ensemble, appearing as soloist in the Eastman Theatre and on tours to Japan and Carnegie Hall with Donald Hunsberger and Mark Davis Scatterday. He has also appeared as a soloist with the Hartford Symphony, the U.S. Army Orchestra, the University of Rochester Symphony, the Youngstown Symphony, the Hamilton New Music Ensemble and the Penfield Symphony.

Active as a jazz and chamber musician, Kellogg was a founding member of the brass and percussion ensemble Rhythm & Brass, touring the United States and Japan and recording four CDs during his two years in the group. He has also performed with Clark Terry, Chris Vadala, Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Daniels, and Mel Tormé. Jazz and commercial recordings include collaborations with Jeff Tyzik, Gene Bertoncini, Allen Vizzutti, Steve Gadd, Gap Mangione and as a member of the Dave Rivello Ensemble. His jazz recording with Eastman School faculty colleague pianist Tony Caramia, Upstate Standards, celebrates the music of upstate New York composers Harold Arlen, Alec Wilder, and Jimmy Van Heusen. Kellogg’s most recent CD, Impressions, is a collection of French music for trombone and piano, featuring pianists Joseph Werner and Christopher Azzara. Since 2016, he has performed extensively with pianist Priscilla Yuen across the United States.

A Conn Trombone performing artist, Kellogg has made appearances at numerous festivals and low brass symposia including the International Trombone Festival, the American Trombone Workshop, the Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival, the Northeast Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference, the Asian Pacific Music Educators Conference, the New York Brass Conference, the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra’s International Youth Orchestra Institute, and the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, as well as at trombone festivals in Panama, Costa Rica, Argentina and Brazil.

In 2006, Kellogg founded Eastman’s annual Summer Trombone Institute, a week-long workshop for high school, college, young professional and adult amateur trombonists. In June 2014, he served as co-host of the International Trombone Festival, held at the Eastman School.

Pianist Priscilla Yuen enjoys a rich and varied career as a soloist, collaborator, teacher and administrator. Currently a faculty member at the Eastman School of Music, Yuen regularly supports instrumentalists and singers from across the Eastman community as they prepare for recitals, competitions and recordings. Additionally, she serves on the piano faculty at the Rochester Institute of Technology and as pianist at John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Rochester, New York.

As a collaborative pianist, Yuen has performed at colleges and universities across the United States, as well as at venues such as the Kennedy Center and New York City’s Yamaha Hall. Serving as festival pianist at the International Trombone Festival, she has performed with Jörgen van Rijen (Royal Concertgebeow Orchestra), Norman Bolter (retired, Boston Symphony), Larry Zalkind (Eastman School of Music faculty), Jeremy Moeller (Chicago Lyric Opera), Ralph Sauer (retired, Los Angeles Philharmonic), Kenneth Thompkins (Detroit Symphony), Peter Steiner (Vienna Philharmonic), Matthew Guilford (National Symphony) and Justin Clark (Bern Symphony). Other musicians with whom she has collaborated include violinist Charles Castleman (Frost School of Music faculty), tubist Carol Jantsch (Philadelphia Orchestra), pianist Graham Johnson (Guildhall School of Music faculty), trumpeter David Bamonte (Oregon Symphony) and noted composer Steven Stucky (Cornell University faculty). Since 2016, Yuen has performed extensively across the country with Eastman faculty trombonist Mark Kellogg.

A native of St. Louis, Yuen received her undergraduate training at the University of Missouri where she studied with Dr. Peter Miyamoto and her Master of Music in Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music from the Eastman School, studying with Dr. Jean Barr. As a graduate student, she was awarded first prize at the Jesse Kneisel Competition as well as the Barbara M.H. Koeng Award for her work with vocal accompanying.

Yuen served as staff pianist and arts/administrative coordinator at the New York State Music Festival for eleven summers. She also served as director of operations at the Odyssey Chamber Music Festival in Columbia, Missouri, as well as a piano fellow for The Quartet Program.
