From the Hearts of Women

The Symphony Orchestra welcomes back soprano and 2017 alumna Victoria Okafor for an evening of lush and textured music, including two extraordinary works for voice and orchestra. The program includes Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915, Grant Still’s song cycle From the Hearts of Women and Ravel’s brilliant arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky.

Symphony Orchestra: Works by Copland

The Symphony Orchestra presents an exciting program from the spring 2021 semester featuring Quiet City and Appalachian Spring, two of Aaron Copland’s seminal works.

Wind Ensemble

The Wind Ensemble presents a mix of old and new works highlighting the unique qualities of percussion, wind and brass instruments. Program highlights include Antonín Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds and Jennifer Jolley’s Lightway, a 2017 work based on Keith Sonnier’s light installation at Munich Airport. The piece musically portrays the rhythmic placement of red and blue lights emanating from the neon installation. Just as the panes of glass, mirrors, and aluminum sheets refract and scatter the colorful neon light, the ostinato is diffused amongst the different colors in the ensemble.

Honors Chamber Music Recital

Shenandoah Conservatory highlights the work of some of its most talented instrumental students with a FREE livestream event on Shenandoah University’s YouTube channel and Shenandoah Conservatory’s Facebook page. Under the direction of Doris Lederer (Director of Chamber Music and Professor of Viola and Chamber Music), the evening features a lineup of classical chamber music repertoire.

Performers will play selected movements from the listed program and will announce the movements from the stage.

Sō Percussion Begins Digital Residency

Sō Percussion kicked off its digital residency week with an exclusive free livestream performance on Shenandoah Conservatory’s Facebook page and Shenandoah University’s YouTube channel on Tuesday, April 27. The performance featured works and personal introductions by an impressive lineup of composers, including Viet Cuong, Angelica Negron, Caroline Shaw, Susan Marshall, Darian Thomas and Vijay Iyer.

On Thursday, April 29, the award-winning new music pioneers performed readings of new works by Samuel Bradshaw ’22 (Bachelor of Music in Composition), Christopher Meyer ’21 (Master of Music in Composition), Chance Morris ’24 (Bachelor of Music in Composition) and Matti Bissen ’22 (Bachelor of Music in Composition).
