Harlem Quartet with Aldo López-Gavilán

PERFORMING ARTS LIVE

The acclaimed Harlem Quartet joins Cuban pianist and composer Aldo López-Gavilán for an electrifying evening of music that The Washington Post hails as “lively and engrossing.” López-Gavilán and the quartet offer a joyously energetic concert experience, showcasing scintillating onstage chemistry in a rich variety of repertoire that ranges from jazz and Afro-Cuban to contemporary and classical music. A rare treat for all music lovers, the program begins with Robert Schumann’s beloved and exuberant Piano Quintet in E-flat Major, followed by an exhilarating lineup of works by López-Gavilán that takes audiences on a journey through Cuba’s myriad of musical traditions.

This engagement of Harlem Quartet with Aldo López-Gavilán is made possible through the ArtsCONNECT program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Piano Masterclass with Aldo López-Gavilán

Revered Cuban pianist and composer Aldo López-Gavilán conducts a masterclass with two Shenandoah Conservatory students from the studios of Alexander Bernstein and Marika Bournaki.

About the Film

Virtuoso Afro-Cuban-born brothers — violinist Ilmar and pianist Aldo — live on opposite sides of a geopolitical chasm a half-century wide. Tracking their parallel lives in New York and Havana, their poignant reunion, and their momentous first performances together, Los Hermanos/The Brothers offers a nuanced, often startling view of estranged nations through the lens of music and family.

Featuring an electrifying, genre-bending score, composed by Cuban Aldo López-Gavilán, performed with his American brother, Ilmar, and with guest appearances by maestro Joshua Bell and the Harlem Quartet.

Dedicated to presenting new works, PUBLIQuartet’s genre-bending programs not only expand the techniques and aesthetic of the traditional string quartet, but also present a wide variety of under-represented music and contemporary composers.
