Choreographer & Program Highlights
“It is my greatest honor to be able to showcase the versatility of our incredible dance artists by featuring both an entertainment industry styles piece and contemporary work in this concert.”
– Tiffanie Carson, faculty choreographer
What are students learning or experiencing through this process?
“When we embark on the first layer of learning a piece of choreography, we delve into the intricate world of movement materials. It is in this exploration that dancers truly embody the choreographer’s vision, bringing to life the specific use of time, space, weight, phrasing and idiosyncratic movement vocabulary. These elements are reflective of who I am as an artist, shaped by my experiences as a Taiwanese American immigrant and influenced by my multicultural dance training background. With each step and every gesture, my artistic history is imprinting into the minds and bodies of the dancers. Through careful coaching and guidance, I hope to impart a piece of my journey onto theirs, just like my artistic mentors onto mine. By doing so, we not only create a cohesive and authentic performance but also foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the cultural diversity that each dancer artist brings to the creative space.”
– Ting-Yu Chen, faculty choreographer
What excites you about working on this project/program?
“I am excited about the revival of the three classic Ting-Yu Chen dances that were originally premiered back in 2004/05. It fills my heart with joy to see these timeless pieces, In Mind’s Eye, Vamos and Into Fire, becoming alive again through this new generation of talented dancers. It has been an immensely gratifying experience for me to see the cast embracing my choreographic devices and capturing the essence of my artistic visions as well as bringing forth a fresh perspective and renewed vitality to these dances.”
– Ting-Yu Chen, faculty choreographer
What are you excited about for audiences to experience?
“I am excited about sharing with the audience the imagination that I was fortunate enough to harness from the mysterious creative energy into choreography. I cannot wait for the audience to witness the exceptional performances of our talented dance artists. Their dedication, passion and skill will undoubtedly bring the house down!”
– Ting-Yu Chen, faculty choreographer
