|Drumming Demonstration with the Women Drummers of Rwanda
Join the internationally acclaimed Women Drummers of Rwanda for a lunchtime drumming workshop and demonstration! This event is presented as part Shenandoah Conservatory’s presentation of The Book of Life, a new theatrical work, written and performed by Rwandan writer and activist Odile Gakire “Kiki” Katese. The work, which features the Women Drummers of Rwanda, is based on letters written by the survivors and perpetrators of Rwanda’s genocide — ordinary people, addressed to those who are gone. Through storytelling, hand-crafted projections and original live music by Women Drummers of Rwanda, the production leads audiences through a remarkable — and ultimately uplifting — journey of how to rebuild a deep understanding of life in the aftermath of incalculable loss.
Performances of The Book of Life at Shenandoah University will be presented at 7:30PM in Glaize Studio Theatre on Tuesday, September 19 and Wednesday, September 20 at 7:30PM.
This project is made possible in part through the Mid Atlantic Folk and Traditional Arts – Community Projects program of Mid Atlantic Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. |
