Work Study Student Employment
The Office of Financial Aid provides ALL eligible full time undergraduate students with the opportunity to participate in the Work Study Student Employment Program with either the Federal Work Study (FWS) award or the Institutional Work Study (IWS) award.
Our program is designed to fill the gap between what students learn in the classroom and the skills needed to succeed in the workplace.
In addition to a paid (yes, paid) experience, students develop transferrable skills through on-the-job learning, gain personal and professional development experiences, and build a support network of mentors and supervisors.
Students eligible for work study can earn up to $2,000 a year with the ability to earn up to $1,000 per term. Unearned funds in the fall term are not carried over to the spring term. Students may earn no more than half of their annual award per term.
Students are encouraged to work between 7-9 hours per week once hired. This allows the student to budget their work study award throughout the term(s) and reserve time for their studies.
Selecting a Work Study Position
Students interested in applying for a work study position must first accept their financial aid work study award, which is part of their award package, via Hornet Hub.
Once the award is accepted they are then automatically enrolled in the Work4SU Canvas Organization which provides the tools necessary to navigate the Work Study Student Employment Program such as a student manual, required paperwork for hire, instructions for applying to jobs, logging hours and the link to the available positions.
Required Paperwork for Hire
Work study student employees are required to complete the following paperwork for hire on an annual basis:
- Work Study Student Employment Contract
- I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form*
- Federal W-4 Tax form
- State VA-4 Tax form
- Direct Deposit Authorization form
These forms are accessible via the Work4SU Canvas Organization.
*The I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form is only required for those students who are new to the program and therefore were not previously employed by SU. Students who were employed by SU the previous year do not need to resubmit this form.
