An article by Director and Professor of Performing Arts Leadership & Management David Edelman, M.F.A., was published by the International Leadership Association (ILA) and featured in its newsletter, Interface. The article on artistry and activism was included as part of ILA’s Grassroots Leadership & the Arts for Social Change Corner. It shared the intertwining story of Edelman’s artistry and LGBTQ activism in the 1980s and included a top ten pedagogical insights which have guided his teaching of graduate arts management students over the years.

Director and Associate Professor of Performing Arts Leadership & Management David Edelman, M.F.A., recently returned from Europe where he lectured at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland; The University of the Arts in Belgrade, Serbia; and the American College of Greece in Athens, on leadership in the performing arts.

“Our philosophy is that there’s nothing that can’t really be done online at this point,” says David Edelman, director of the performing arts leadership and management program at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., which offers a fully online M.S. degree. “When students come out of this program, they will find that their indebtedness is not what you typically hear of with other kinds of programs and is the kind of thing they can manage, even at the traditionally lower salaries you find in the nonprofit sector.”

The impact of the degree can be measured on several levels. Because these programs strive to offer diversity in terms of both subject matter covered and the students and faculty who are part of the programs, graduates develop a broader perspective of different areas of the arts, which they can apply in a variety of positions and fields. Graduates go on to work at museums, theater and dance companies, arts centers and councils, symphonies and operas, and private foundations. Some even start their own galleries or arts nonprofits.

Director and Associate Professor of Performing Arts Leadership and Management David Edelman, M.F.A., was invited to join the board of directors of Social Theory, Politics and the Arts (STP&A), an organization that brings together researchers, policymakers, practitioners, artists and students to explore key trends, practices and policy issues concerning the arts around the world. STP&A is affiliated with the Journal of Arts Management, Law and Society (JAMLS), which has been an authoritative peer-reviewed journal in the arts management and cultural policy fields for more than 40 years.

Edelman presented his paper on teaching social justice in arts management leadership training at the STP&A International Conference in Manchester, United Kingdom, on Friday, Nov. 2. Prior to this, he participated in a panel presentation on Grassroots Leadership and the Arts for Social Change at the International Leadership Association conference in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday, Oct. 26.

Shenandoah Conservatory welcomed new full-time faculty members this semester: Visiting Assistant Professor of Voice Aaron Agulay, D.M.A.; Assistant Professor of Voice Stephanie Higgins, M.M.; Visiting Choral Artist & Conservatory Choir Director Harris Ipock, D.M.A. (in progress); Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Therapy Marisol Norris, Ph.D. (in progress); Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Education Lynn Rechel, Ph.D.; Assistant Professor of Cello Julian Schwarz, M.M.; Assistant Professor of Music Theory Rachel Short, Ph.D.; and Visiting Assistant Professor of Modern Dance Laurie Taylor, B.S.

An essay on classical/jazz music and performance training titled, “Beyond Beauty, Brilliance, and Expression: On Reimagining Jazz and Classical Music Performance Training and Reconnecting with the General Public,” by Shenandoah Conservatory Dean and Professor of Music Michael Stepniak Ed.D., was published in a recent issue of the journal College Music Symposium. Professor of Dance Ting-Yu Chen, M.F.A, and Charlotte A. & Verne E. Collins Endowed Professor and Associate Professor of Music Education Jeffrey H. Marlatt, Ph.D., have taken on new roles at Shenandoah Conservatory, as the associate deans for student affairs, and faculty and academic affairs, respectively. A distinguished artist and former chair of the Dance Division, Chen has presented choreography and taught dance at renowned institutions in the United States and around the world. In her role as associate dean for student affairs, Chen is working closely with all leaders in the conservatory as well as key university resource centers related to the health and well-being and academic success of students. In addition to his esteemed teaching in the undergraduate and graduate music education programs at Shenandoah, Dr. Marlatt has most recently served as the assistant dean for student learning in the conservatory. In his new position as associate dean for faculty and academic affairs, Marlatt is the point person for issues impacting excellence in teaching, curriculum and students’ academic progress.

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Education Lynn Rechel Ph.D., presented  “The Musical Child: a Lecture/Lab Course in the Undergraduate Music Education Curriculum,” at a poster session at the Mountain Lake Colloquium for Teachers of General Music Methods in Pembroke, Virginia, in May. Rechel also reviewed session proposals for this symposium. Rechel presented a poster, “The Class within a Class: The Musical Child for Undergraduate Music Education Majors,” in August at the 23rd International Kodaly Symposium in Camrose, Alberta, Canada. In March, Rechel also presented a workshop session, “Let the Children Play!,” at the National Organization of Kodaly Educators (OAKE) Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Production and Recording Technology Mike Sokol, A.A., has published a number of articles on prosoundweb.com. Articles include a motivational piece for churches, “What Do Burned Engine Valves and Worship Teams Have in Common?,” one on music mixing techniques and philosophy – “Improve the Live Worship Sound Mix with These Tips and Techniques,” a tech piece on bass frequencies, “Lowering The Boom (Literally): Keeping Bass Energy Under Control As Part Of A Semi-Silent Stage” and an article about electrical safety for sound techs and performers – “Analyzing Failures in AC Outlet Testing and What It Means for Pro Audio.”

Distinguished Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Production and Recording Technology Paul DiFranco is the music licensing manager for the hit BET Network TV series, “The Quad,” which has been greenlit for a second season. Production began in Atlanta, Georgia, this September. The show follows the trials and tribulations of college life at an HBCU in Georgia.

DiFranco also just completed music supervision on the latest iteration of the “Bring It On” series of films, “Bring It On: Worldwide #Cheersmack.” Produced and distributed by Universal Studios, the film was recently released and is available on Netflix and Amazon. DiFranco secured songs by Lady Gaga, Iggy Azalea, The American Authors and more for the film. This latest rendition is unique in that it employs the device of a dark, edgy cheer team (The Truth) bent on ruling the cheer world.

Victor Brown Chair in Violin and Associate Professor of Strings Akemi Takayama, M.M., and Silvan Negruţiu ’13 appeared in four different cities (Xi’an, China; Okinawa, Fukuoka and Tokyo, Japan) this summer performing works by Cal Roskott, including his Violin Sonata. Negruţiu received a D.M.A. in Music Performance (Piano) from Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University in 2013. He studied with Distinguished Artist-in-Residence, Chair of Keyboard Division and Professor of Piano John O’Conor, Mus.D.

Associate Professor of Theatre Carolyn Coulson, M.F.A., led a Global Experiential Learning (GEL) trip on London theatre and history in May with 13 Shenandoah Conservatory theatre students. They visited Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford and saw over ten shows in London featuring actors such as David Tennant, Imelda Staunton and Damian Lewis. The group also had the opportunity to meet and talk with award-winning actor Adrian Lester at Shakespeare’s Globe (see picture). This summer, Coulson also directed “Oklahoma!” for Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre and submitted an article of travel writing for publication.

At the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) July (2017) board meeting in Tallahassee, Florida, Board President Linda L. Snyder appointed Janette Ogg Voice Research Center Director and Associate Professor of Voice (Baritone) David Meyer, D.M., to chair the NATS Voice Science Advisory Committee. Committee members include Drs. Robert T. Sataloff, Ingo Titze, Shenandoah Conservatory Adjunct Associate Professor of Vocal Pedagogy Wendy Leborgne, Ph.D., and Scott McCoy. The committee is a resource for current research and voice investigations, including vocal health and wellness, and participation in research and voice investigations.

Auxiliary Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music History Alanna Ropchock Tierno, Ph.D., recently returned from a two-month post-doctoral fellowship at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. While there, she pursued research for her current book project. While in Germany, she gave three presentations of her research. The first, “The Musical Legacy of the German Reformation,” was at a conference in Augsburg. She also served as co-organizer for the conference. She then gave a colloquium talk at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar in Weimar on June 28. The talk was on her dissertation research, “The Lutheran Reception of Josquin’s Missa Pange lingua.” She also presented a paper, “To the Glory of Whom? Josquin’s Missa de Beata Virgine in Catholic and Lutheran Ritual Contexts,” on July 5 at the Medieval and Renaissance Music conference in Prague, as part of the organized double session, “Ritual Matters: Composition, Revision, and Transmission in Renaissance Music for the Mass.”

Associate Professor of Music Education Stephanie Standerfer, Ph.D., presented “Reading and Literacy in Music: An Embedded Content Area Reading Course within the Music Education Curriculum” at the biennial meeting of the Society for Music Teacher Educators (SMTE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from Sept. 7 through Sept. 9. She was also named the SMTE chair for the Virginia Music Educators Association.

Assistant Professor of Music Theory Rachel Short, Ph.D., presented “’This Thing Might Turn into Something: The Choreomusical Layers of Hellzapoppin’” at the fifth international Rhythm Changes Conference, Re/Sounding Jazz,” in Amsterdam on Sept. 1, with Chris Wells. Dr. Short and Wells analyzed the Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers routine from the 1941 Olsen & Johnson comedy film “Hellzapoppin’,” synched up to Basie’s “Jumpin’ at the Woodside,” recording, to which it was choreographed. They highlighted the clever and subtle musicality in Frankie Manning’s choreography that is obscured in the film when paired with a new musical arrangement by Freddy Martin.

Director of Musical Theatre and Assistant Professor of Theatre Kevin Covert, B.F.A., was appointed to the board of the Virginia Theatre Association. He specifically serves as the chair of the communications and outreach division of the board

Director and Associate Professor of Performing Arts Leadership David Edelman, M.F.A., has been appointed to the Scientific Committee of the international journal Cultural Management: Science and Education. He also attended the 30th Congress of the European Network on Cultural Management and Policy from Sept. 27, through Sept. 30, in Brussels, Belgium, where he presented his paper, “Emerging International Networks in Arts and Culture Research and Education.” And with Assistant Dean of Administration; Director of Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Performing Arts Leadership and Management Jennifer Green-Flint ’16, D.Prof., he co-authored a paper, “The Mind of the Artist/The Mind of the Leader: What Neuroscience Can Teach Us About the Training of Arts Managers and Leaders,” that is being published this fall in the Journal of Cultural Management and Policy. Both Edelman and Dr. Green attended the Social Theory, Politics and the Arts Conference from Oct. 12, through Oct. 14, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where they’re presenting their paper, “Narcissism, Empathy and Cultural Leadership.”

Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Conducting Tim Robblee, Ph.D., was a guest clinician at the University of British Columbia Wind Conducting Symposium from July 27, through July 31, in Vancouver, Canada. Alongside fellow clinicians Rob Taylor and Craig Kirchhoff, he taught 30 conductors in the areas of conducting technique, repertoire, rehearsal and score study.

This summer, Adjunct Professor of Vocal Coaching Robert Thieme, M.M., traveled to Panama City, Panama, for 10 days where he coached singers for the Fundación Opera Panamá, and accompanied them and a number of guest artists in a recital at the Iglesia San José Casco Antiguo, San Felipe. The program was titled, “Laudamous Te: Musica Sacra de Opera, Zarzuela Oratorio.” He also spent two weeks with the Richard Crittenden Opera Program in Washington, D.C., coaching singers in many opera excerpts.

Adjunct Associate Professor of Music Therapy Thomas Sweitzer ’94, ’10, B.F.A., Master’s Certificate in Music Therapy, is the executive director and co-founder of A Place to Be, a nonprofit organization based in Middleburg, Virginia. His organization is presenting “A WILL to Survive” at the Kennedy Center on Nov. 19.

Associate Professor of Voice and Coordinator of Musical Theatre Voice Matt Edwards ’15, D.M.A., was selected to serve as one of four master teachers in the 2018 National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Intern Program. The program will take place at the University of Colorado-Boulder from June 4, through June 14, 2018. Edwards will teach alongside Margaret Cusack (Westminster Choir College), Brian Gill (Indiana University) and Jan Prokop (independent studio New York City and Montclair State University), as well as the collaborative piano master teacher Arlene Shrut (The Juilliard School).

Edwards has also received the 2017 Van Lawrence Fellowship by the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the Voice Foundation to conduct real-time MRI research on professional musical theatre performers in New York City. Edwards is partnering with Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Aaron Johnson, Ph.D., at New York University School of Medicine, in this effort. In August, Edwards, Music Director (Theatre) and Assistant Professor of Theatre Rick Edinger M.A., and Assistant Professor of Voice Stephanie Higgins M.M., (DMA in progress), traveled to New York University to film MRI training videos to help teach Shenandoah musical theatre students. The videos show students how the various parts of the vocal tract move during singing and how those movements affect tone quality. The videos will also be used at the CCM Vocal Pedagogy Institute, held at Shenandoah, to help train voice teachers to analyze and troubleshoot the singing voice. This science-based approach to vocal training is the foundation of Shenandoah Conservatory’s Vocal Pedagogy programs. By understanding what is happening during vocal training, more effective teaching methods can be developed, which will drastically improve student outcomes.

Auxiliary Adjunct Associate Professor of Voice and Co-founder of the CCM Vocal Pedagogy Institute Edrie Means Weekly ’84 M.M., and her co-authors, Rachelle Fleming, Linda Carroll, Gwen Korovin and Shenandoah Conservatory Adjunct Associate Professor of Vocal Pedagogy Wendy Leborgne ’94, Ph.D., recently had a research paper, “Vocal Health Care Survey Among Amateur and Professional Voice Users,” accepted for publication in the Journal of Voice. She is now a reviewer for both Plural Publishing and the world’s highly regarded journal for voice research and medicine, the Journal of Voice. Weekly also presented country music and musical theatre styles sessions this summer at the CCM Institute.

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Theatre Sally Anderson, B.A., B.Ed., presented her annual outdoor Shakespeare production in the gardens of the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley on several weekends in September. Music direction was by Shenandoah Conservatory alumnus, David Landrum ’17. Anderson’s “As You Like It” is set in the South right after the Civil War, with the Forest of Arden being a campground of those (Confederate & Union) who gathered around Duke Senior and never returned home.

Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Professor of Dance Ting-Yu Chen, M.F.A., received a choreography commission to create “Waiting,” an original dance for James Madison University’s premier dance ensemble, Virginia Repertory Dance Company. The piece premiered on Oct. 13, and Oct. 14, as part of DanceShare at the Earlynn J. Miller Dance Theatre, and is being presented again on Dec. 7, through Dec. 10, as part of Dancescapes at the Mainstage Theatre of the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Invited by the dance company director and professor Shane O’Hara, Chen will be featured as a guest choreographer alongside with nationally and internationally known guest artists, including Washington, D.C.-based Christopher K. Morgan, John Dixon from East Carolina, and Michigan-based PJ Maske, artistic director of Urban Garden Performing Arts.

Adjunct Instructor of Music Therapy Bronwen Landless ’04, ’13, MT-BC, presented at the European Consortium for Arts Therapies Education (ECArTE) in September, in Krakow, Poland. The title of this year’s conference is “Traditions in Transition: New Articulations in Art Therapies.” She presented with Dr. Gerber and Ms. Biondo of Drexel University on the topic of Arts-based Research within Dominant Scholarly Traditions. She was also invited by the conference directors to present a masterclass in music therapy titled, “Facility-wide Performances: A Trauma-informed Music Therapy Approach to Building Community.”

Adjunct Associate Professor of Trumpet Chuck Seipp D.M.A., performed over the summer and has a full slate of fall masterclasses. In June, he performed a trumpet/organ concert in Sarasota, Florida, with Mary Mozelle and with the Shenandoah Faculty Brass Quintet at Reston Town Center in Reston, Virginia. In July, he performed in the United States Army Band Alumni concert in Washington, D.C. In September, he performed in a trumpet/organ/piano recital at The Villages at Orchard Ridge with Randall Sheets, with the Commonwealth Brass Quintet in Olney, Maryland, and in a trumpet/organ/piano faculty recital with Randall Sheets at Shenandoah University. He performed again with Mozelle in Sarasota and St. Petersburg, Florida, in October. He also taught  three brass masterclasses in Florida in October, as well. He is also teaching masterclasses through the Shenandoah Faculty Brass Quintet School, October through December. He and Sheets performed a trumpet/organ recital in Culpeper, Virginia, in October and trumpet/organ recitals in North Carolina and Georgia, in November.

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Voice (Soprano) Natalie Conte  M.M., won the National Federation of Music Clubs (NAFM) Young Artist Competition in the female voice category in June. She will present recitals throughout the country on behalf of NAFM for the next two years.

Anna Lee Van Buren Chair in Clarinet, Coordinator of Winds and Percussion and Associate Professor of Clarinet Garrick Zoeter, M.M., conducted clarinet masterclasses during the month of June for students at The National University of Music in Bucharest, Romania; The Scoala Populara Vespasian Lungu in Braila, Romania; and the Conservatory of Music of the Univesitea de Vest in Timisoara, Romania. He also performed a recital alongside his wife, soprano Mariana Mihai-Zoeter, at the famed Teatrul Maria Filotti in Braila. 
 
Professor of Bass Donovan Stokes, D.M., performed at the International Society of Bassists Convention in a series of duets with bassists Rufus Reid (Jazz legend), Lynn Seaton (Grammy Award winner and professor at University of North Texas), Peter Dominguez (Tommy Flanagan, and others-professor at Oberlin), Kevin Johnson ’11 (Shenandoah University alumnus) and pianist Mark Rubinstein (The Ohio State University) at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, on June 8. He also conducted the world premiere of “Dreams Can Come True” by Spanish composer Simón Garcia. Dr. Stokes also served as a guest artist for the Golden Gate Bass Camp from June 26 to June 30 in San Francisco, California, where he taught, presented a solo recital and performed in a chamber setting with electric bass virtuoso Michael Manring, members of the San Francisco opera and opera singers Andrea Silvestrelli and Reginald Smith, Jr. He was also the guest artist for the Texas Hill Country Bass Camp in Austin, Texas on July 17 and July 18.

Professor of Piano Elizabeth (Watkins) Caluda, D.M.A., has retired after serving for 39 years on the faculty at Shenandoah Conservatory. In her letter to Dean Michael Stepniak, Ed.D., informing him of her retirement, Dr. Caluda said, “I am grateful to Shenandoah for having given me the opportunity to fulfill my professional goals of developing and teaching in a university class piano program as well as teaching applied piano to many undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degree students.”

Professor of Percussion Earl Yowell, M.M., was a featured timpani artist and clinician for the Percussive Arts Society’s Virginia/DC Chapter Day of Percussion on March 25 at Virginia Tech’s Moss Arts Center. More than 200 students, professionals and teachers gathered to celebrate percussion.

Director and Associate Professor of Performing Arts Leadership and Management (PALM) David Edelman, M.F.A., attended the Association for Arts Administration Educators International Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland, in May, participating in a panel presentation on cultural leadership in an age of anxiety with colleagues from the United Kingdom and Serbia. June 5 through June 11, Edelman led a group of 11 graduate students from the PALM program to Athens, Greece, for the first Summer Arts Leadership Institute. He was recently published in “Grassroots Leadership and the Arts for Social Change” with a chapter titled, “Acting Up and Fighting Back: How New York’s Artistic Community Responded to AIDS.” Edelman was also awarded an innovation grant from Shenandoah Conservatory to spend time this summer researching the development of a distance-learning curriculum for the PALM program. And, he is also working this summer on two research papers: one on narcissism and leadership training and the other on emerging international networks in arts management research/education.

Associate Professor of Music History and Literature Laurie McManus, Ph.D., presented a paper at the 5th Biennial North American Conference on Nineteenth-Century Music, in Nashville, Tennessee, on the campus of Vanderbilt University from June 7 through June 9. The paper is, “Where Present and Past Meet: Teaching Romantic Performativity and Reception.”

Auxiliary Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music History Alanna Ropchock, Ph.D., is on a research fellowship this summer at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. She has a forthcoming article in the prestigious Early Music Journal.

Director of Graduate Music Therapy Studies and Associate Professor of Music Therapy Anthony Meadows, Ph.D., had an article co-authored with Katherine Wimpenny from the United Kingdom accepted for publication in the Journal of Music Therapy. The article is titled, “Core Themes in Music Therapy Clinical Improvisation: An Arts-informed Qualitative Research Synthesis.” This article also included a video re-presentation of the synthesis data (this first of its kind in the music therapy field) and two Shenandoah Conservatory graduate music therapy students, Iliana Fernandez ’17 and Nick Mariani ’17, both of whom were integral to the video. The students worked from a theme Dr. Meadows and Wimpenny developed, constructed the video and edited the final version. According to Meadows, “In my field, this is an advancement of research methodology—the first to include video as a data analysis and presentation tool as part of a research synthesis.”

“The video represents the data in two ways,” Meadows said. “1) it includes the written themes and quotes from the study in the actual video (you see these as text) and also uses the visual image of water to represent the improvisational process, with music from the original qualitative studies in the video. Thus, the video re-presents the written data analysis in an artistic form.”

Meadows will also present at the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) Leadership Academy. This one-day program will be held at the national AMTA conference in St. Louis, Missouri, in November. Also, Meadows was invited to write a chapter for the second volume of “Guided Imagery and Music: The Bonny Method and Beyond.” The chapter will focus on Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) and cancer care. Barcelona Publishers is working to update the first edition of the book originally published in 2002, now 15 years ago, with the goal that the book will be the primer for GIM training.

Director of the Janette Ogg Voice Research Center and Associate Professor of Voice (Baritone) David Meyer, D.M., presented three scientific research papers in collaboration with some of his students and sang at the Voices of Summer Gala with pianist Richard Raub in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at The Voice Foundation‘s 46th annual symposium that focused on care of the professional voice from May 31 through June 4. Additionally, he attended meetings of The Voice Foundation’s Advisory Board, the Journal of Voice Editorial Board, the Voice Labs Representatives, the New Investigators Forum and with Plural Publishing as a consulting editor.

Auxiliary Adjunct Associate Professor of Voice and Co-Founder of the Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM) Vocal Pedagogy Institute Edrie Means Weekly, ’84, M.M., attended and performed at The Voice Foundation‘s 46th Annual Symposium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from May 31 through June 4. The theme of the conference focused on the care of the professional voice. She sang, “How Long Has This Been Going On?” at the award gala and dedicated it to awardee and Broadway legend Tommy Tune, with whom she has performed in the past. Weekly also presented a workshop session titled, “Country Singing for Musical Theatre 101” in June at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and presented two research papers – “Retraining Voice Users with a Diagnosed Vocal Pathology” and “Do Amateurs and Professionals Seek the Same Vocal Health Advice?: Survey of 1195 Voice Users.”

Since June of last year, Coordinator of Music Theory and Associate Professor of Music Keith Salley, Ph.D., has published three articles in the College Music Symposium, Journal of Jazz Studies and Music Theory Online. He has also served as guest editor for the journals Engaging Students and The Journal of Jazz Studies, presented at the American Musicological Society/Society for Music Theory joint conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and gave the keynote talk at the “Sound, Color, Shape” interdisciplinary symposium at the University of South Dakota. Salley has a forthcoming chapter in the book, “Over and Over: Exploring Repetition in Popular Music” (Bloomsbury Press) and is beginning work on an invited chapter for a book on the evolution of jazz harmony (Oxford University Press).

Director of Composition and Coordinator of New Music Jonathan Newman, M.M., traveled to the Barbican Centre in London, England, on July 7 for the premiere of a new choral work for the BBC Singers. He was also in Austria for a week in July to serve as a guest artist with the Mid-Europe World Youth Wind Orchestra Project in Schladming, Austria. In October, Newman traveled to New York City for the world premiere of his re-imagined “MASS,” with the Choir of Trinity Wall Street.

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Production and Recording Technology Dan Shores ’99, B.M., presented at the 142nd Audio Engineering Society (AES) convention in Berlin, Germany, from May 20 through May 23.

This summer, Director and Associate Professor of Music Production and Recording Technology Golder O’Neill, M.M.E.,worked on installing a new network recording system called RedNet that will connect three of Shenandoah’s buildings and performance areas to record recitals and performances from remote locations.

Professor of Choral Conducting and Choral Music Karen Keating ’02, D.M.A., served as the music director for Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre’s (SSMT) sold-out run of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.”

Distinguished Artist-in-Residence, Chair of Keyboard Division and Professor of Piano John O’Conor, Mus. D. is performing and teaching around the world during the summer season. From May 16 through May 27, he presented four recitals in Ireland. From there, he traveled to Sweden from May 18 through May 20 to present a recital and masterclass at Karlstad University. From May 29 through June 9, he traveled to Vienna, Austria, to serve as a jury member at the International Beethoven Piano Competition. He then traveled to Shenzhen, China, from June 11 through June 24 to serve as a jury member at the Shenzhen International Piano Concerto Competition. From June 26 through July 2, he hosted a number of masterclasses at the Adamant Summer Piano Festival in Montpelier, Vermont. From July 3 through July 16, he served as a visiting professor at the Showa University of Music in Tokyo, Japan. From July 18 through July 29, he was in Dublin, Ireland, to lead masterclasses for the annual Beethoven Bootcamp at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. From August 14 through August 16, traveled to Galway, Ireland, to present a number of masterclasses.

This summer Professor of Theatre Kirsten Trump, M.F.A., coached dialects for Evan Linder’s “Byhalia, Mississippi.” It is being directed by Marc Masterson, the former artistic director of Actor’s Theater of Louisville, Kentucky.

Adjunct Instructor of Theatre Michael “Jonz” Jones, M.F.A., designed two floats in the New York City Pride Parade. One float was made for Target and the other for Choice Hotels, which is also in the Boston Pride Parade.

Sanja Petričić, Ph.D., from Singidunum University (Belgrade, Serbia) will join the Performing Arts Leadership and Management program as Fulbright scholar-in-residence during the spring 2017 semester. Petričić currently serves as associate dean for student affairs and associate professor at the Faculty for Media and Communication at Singidunum University in Belgrade, Serbia. Petričić received her bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music (Ohio), an Artist Diploma in chamber music from Belgrade Conservatory of Music (Serbia), a master’s degree in collaborative piano from The Juilliard School (New York), and her Ph.D. in art management and media from the University of Arts (Belgrade, Serbia).

Director of Performing Arts Leadership and Management Program and Associate Professor of Arts Management David Edelman, M.F.A., and Director of Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Arts Management Jennifer Green-Flint, D.Prof., presented at the 35th annual conference of the Association of Arts Administration Educators in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 3. They shared their research on recent neurological studies and the relationship to leadership training of performing artists.

Assistant Professor of Dance at Shenandoah University and Assistant Director and dancer for Christopher K. Morgan & Artists (CKM&A), Tiffanie Carson, M.F.A., taught at CKM&A’s fourth annual Professional Summer Intensive program with forty participants from more than fourteen different universities. In June, she participated in Project 4 5 20, a collaborative project between four choreographers (Calen J. Kurka, Chris Hale, Mike Esperanza, Bryn Cohn) and twenty dancers. This one week residency project culminated in three performances at the Salvatore Capezio Theatre at Peridance in New York City. In July, Carson’s 2015 work, “Run Love Run,” was accepted into October’s VelocityDC Dance Festival where the piece—featuring eight current members of the Shenandoah Conservatory Dance Ensemble and two Shenandoah Conservatory dance alumni—is being performed at Sidney Harman Hall in Washington, D.C.

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Theatre Sally Anderson, B.A., B.Ed., directed Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book” (adapted by R. Rex Stephenson) at the Water Garden in the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley on July 10, 17 and 24. 

New research by Coordinator of Music Theory and Associate Professor of Music Keith Salley, Ph.D., is being published in the fall 2016 issue (volume 22.3) of Music Theory Online. Salley’s latest project, “Capturing the Ineffable: Three Transcriptions of a Jazz Solo by Sonny Rollins,” involves two other authors: Dr. René Rusch (University of Michigan) and Dr. Chris Stover (The New School, NYC). This study features three divergent transcriptions of an improvisation by tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, delving into problems of purpose in transcription, and also the vagaries of musical notation itself. The study draws considerably on literature from the domains of jazz studies and ethnomusicology, and is the culmination of work that the three authors first presented in 2011.

Director of Graduate Music Therapy Studies and Associate Professor of Music Therapy Anthony Meadows, Ph.D., presented a paper at the 10th annual European Music Therapy Congress in Vienna Austria from July 5 through 9. The title was “Meaning-Making Processes in Clinical Improvisation: An Arts-informed Qualitative Research Synthesis.” Dr. Meadows also had an article accepted for publication in SAGE Research Methods Health titled, “An Arts-Informed Qualitative Research Synthesis into Clinical Improvisation in Music Therapy: Researcher Reflections,” which was co-authored with Dr. Katherine Wimpenny and is to be published in January 2017.

Associate Professor of Music Education Stephanie Standerfer, Ph.D., attended the thirty-second World Conference of the International Society for Music Education in Glasgow, Scotland in July. She presented a research poster, “National Board Certification as Professional Development for Music Teachers: Multiple Correspondence Analysis of learning from the Process,” as well as in the “Self, Peer, and Shared Assessment Influences on Music Teacher Identity” session. Additionally, she co-presented a symposium, “Mentoring Graduate Student Writers: International Issues and Practices,” with colleagues from four universities in the United States and Germany.

Professor of Trumpet and Conducting Scott Nelson, D.M.A., performed with the Maryland Symphony Brass Quintet and the Maryland Symphony Orchestra at the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival on June 24 and 25 at the Wisp Resort in Deep Creek, Maryland. Nelson adjudicated the American Legion National Concert Band Competition in Cincinnati, Ohio on Aug. 27. On Aug. 25 he presented a masterclass on his book, “Breathing for Musicians ” at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Guitar Candice Mowbray, D.M.A., performed in the legendary Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress in June as part of its “Performing the Archives” series. In duet with virtuoso mandolinist, Neil Gladd, she performed rarely heard works including a Baroque suite by Carlo Arrigoni and “Artist’s Vals” by Valentine Abt. (Mr. Gladd briefly taught mandolin at Shenandoah Conservatory.) In July, Mowbray collaborated with composer and Shenandoah alumnus, Richard Zarou ‘03, to record an entire album of his works for flute, cello, guitar and voice.  And, the Fairfield Duo (Mowbray and flutist Nora Suggs) once again received a grant from the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts to provide high-quality chamber music concerts for residents of senior living facilities. The duo provided musical performances to residents in Bethlehem, Allentown and Nazareth, Pennsylvania. 

Director of Composition and Coordinator of New Music Jonathan Newman, M.M., served as one of two composers-in-residence for the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra’s (CYSO) 70th anniversary season. The other composer-in-residence is percussionist and drummer for the Chicago-based band Wilco. Newman was commissioned in 2011 by the CYSO to compose “Blow It Up, Start Again,” which is one of Newman’s most often performed pieces today. Read more about his residency here.

Professor of Flute Jonathan Snowden, A.G.S.M., hosted the third annual National Flute Workshop from July 11 through 15 at Shenandoah. Program highlights included one-on-one and group masterclasses with world-renowned flutist Snowden, and a resident pianist for student solo recital night. 

Auxiliary Adjunct Associate Professor of Voice (Soprano) Edrie Means Weekly, M.M., presented “Bringing the Song to Life: It’s a Matter of Style” and judged the National Music Theatre Competition at the National Association of Teachers of Singing national Convention in Chicago, Illinois.

Shaw and Lederer for Shenandoah Conservatory faculty news for Aug. 2016

Professor of Cello Clyde Thomas Shaw, M.M., and Director of Instrumental Chamber Music and Professor of Viola and Chamber Music Doris Lederer, Diploma, Curtis Institute of Music, taught lessons and presented masterclasses at the Qingdao International Masterclass Festival in Qingdao, China from August 1 through 8. The faculty included artists and teachers from China, Russia and the United States.  We represented Shenandoah Conservatory and our participation was by invitation of the festival. After the Qingdao festival, Lederer and Shaw traveled to Xi’an, China to participate as artist teachers and performers at the 2016 Silk Road Sound of the Piano, Strings and Voice Music Festival in Xi’an, China, from August 9 through 22. They taught private lessons, coached chamber music, held masterclasses and gave public performances.

 

 

On June 1, Director of the Janette Ogg Voice Research Center and Associate Professor of Voice (Baritone) David Meyer, D.M., presented one of five featured papers on the science of the singing voice at the 45th annual Care of the Professional Voice Symposium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This meeting is the preeminent international gathering of voice teachers, researchers, speech language pathologists and laryngologists. Other featured presenters included Dr. Robert Sataloff, Dr. Ron Scherer and Dr. Johnan Sandberg. View his presentation below. 

In July, an article by Dr. Meyer and his voice pedagogy doctoral student Leon Neto, “A Joyful Noise: The Vocal Health of Worship Leaders and Contemporary Christian Singers,” was accepted for publication in the Journal of Voice.

Chair of Vocal/Choral Division and Associate Professor of Voice (Tenor) Byron Jones, D.M.A., completed his fifth summer of teaching at Seagle Music Colony in Schroon Lake, New York. Founded in 1915 by operatic baritone Oscar Seagle, the colony is one of the leading—and the oldest—training programs in the United States for aspiring young opera singers. As a member of the performance faculty, Jones’ duties included giving weekly voice lessons to young artists, participation in daily audition panels and conducting masterclasses. Former students from Seagle Music Colony have gone on to perform with the prominent opera companies including Santa Fe, Des Moines Metro, Glimmerglass, Saratoga, Wolf Trap and Fort Worth.

Distinguished Artist-in-Residence, Chair of the Keyboard Division and Professor of Piano John O’Conor, Mus.D, in April performed with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra in Madison, Wisconsin, was a platform speaker at the Music Teachers National Association Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas, gave two masterclasses to the Music Institute of Chicago and completed his teaching assignments at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. In May, he spoke to the Washington Adult Music Student Forum, visited Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh for an ex-student’s recital, attended a present student’s recital at Winchester Medical Center, performed an “Encores” recital for the supporters of the Piano Society of Shenandoah at the home of Shenandoah Board of Trustees Chair Marjorie Lewis, flew to Ireland for meetings about the Dublin International Piano Competition of which he is artistic director, spent three days in Vicenza, Italy giving masterclasses at the conservatory there and attended a meeting (which he helped organize) at the University of Music in Vienna, Austria. In June, he traveled to Tokyo, Japan for two weeks as visiting professor at at the Showa University of Music; gave the 17th Beethoven Bootcamp piano course over two weeks at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, Ireland and went to Adamant, Vermont to conduct an annual week of masterclasses. He traveled to Brescia, Italy in July to offer a week of masterclasses at the Summer Academy. He also spent a week giving masterclasses and performing the Beethoven 3rd Piano Concerto at the annual Summer Course in Perugia, Italy. He finished out the summer by conducting a week of masterclasses in August at Merkin Hall in New York.

Sally AndersonAdjunct Assistant Professor Sally Anderson, B.Ed., directed “Dancing at Lughnasa” by Brian Friel at Winchester Little Theatre in May. Costume Designer and Associate Professor of Costume Design Jennifer Flitton Adams, M.F.A., designed the costumes for the play. Trish Epperson ‘11 plays Christina Mundy in the production, which ran May 6 through 21.

 

 

Kirsten TrumpKirsten Trump, M.F.A., was promoted from associate professor of theatre to full professor. She also coached a Chicago dialect for “Superior Donuts” at the Maryland Ensemble Theatre in Frederick, Maryland and Irish dialects for world premiere of the Ronan Noone play, “The Second Girl” at the Contemporary American Theater Festival in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.
