On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, McCormick Civil War Institute Director Jonathan Noyalas ’01, M.A., (pictured, above) hosted a tour featuring the experiences of Winchester’s African Americans during the Civil War era. The tour visited sites that highlighted the experiences of both the enslaved and the free, as well as played in making emancipation a reality. It also explored how efforts discussed in the tour inspired hope — not only in the 1860s, but a century later.

The current One Big Question series, which asks “What’s Beyond the Pandemic?” held a Feb. 10 virtual presentation, “Reflecting on the Pandemic,” with Dr. Colin Greene, director, Lord Fairfax Health District, who discussed the effect of vaccination, risks of not getting vaccinated, and lessons learned. The second event, “[Ask the Experts] COVID-19: Past, Present, and What’s Ahead: An open forum for community questions regarding SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19, vaccinations, and what happens next,” will be held virtually at 7 p.m. on March 11, with Shenandoah University experts in the fields of virology, immunology, and public health.
