The Master of Music in Composition includes four semesters of private composition study with established composers, courses in advanced musical analysis, music theory and literature electives, as well as bibliography and research. The culminating experiences include a major composition for a large ensemble and a comprehensive examination.

Shenandoah's student composers have numerous opportunities to present their work. Their compositions frequently are performed by their peers on studio, division and solo recitals, and all of the Conservatory's major ensembles have performed student works. At least one recital of music by student composers is presented each semester.
