In the Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies program, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar and percussion students major in their auditioned instrument and minor in both classical and jazz piano. Students complete major applied study in both the classical and jazz idioms, thus enhancing their opportunities for success as professional musicians upon graduation. Students in the Jazz Studies program receive training in a variety of specialized courses in recording techniques, MIDI technology, music notation, improvisation, and arranging. Shenandoah's state-of-the-art recording studio provides jazz students the opportunity to record on projects with Music Production and Recording Technology, forming valuable partnerships with students in other majors. Students therefore become accustomed to the excitement and pressure of performing in the recording studio, as well as on the stage, in ensembles, and on their required half recital and full recital.
Successful graduates of Shenandoah University's Jazz program include drummer Billy Drummond, arranging Alan Baylock, pianist Timothy Young, drummer Alphonso Young, and pianist Laurence Elder.
