Description

Timber Ridge School is a residential treatment facility that has been serving students with severe emotional and behavioral problems for more than 30 years. Approximately 80 students attend middle and high school on campus with special education services, while also receiving individual, group, and family therapy through the Department of Clinical Services. The practicum student would have options to observe, and to some degree, participate in the following kind of treatment-related intervention and experiences: pre-placement interviews, Character Education Groups, psychiatric consults, parent support groups, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training, individual therapy, group therapy, residential treatment activities, entering psychological data into a database, and various staff trainings focused on helping and relating to children and adolescents.

  • 1 position depending on site need
  • Offered in both Fall and Spring semesters

Special Prerequisites

  • Because Timber Ridge School is a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week facility serving a sometimes treatment-resistant population, this practicum requires a high level of maturity and flexibility in work hours
  • Completion of Behavior Modification (PSY 330)

Expectations and Requirements

  • 120 hours completed at site
  • Initial training
  • Twice monthly meetings with Psychology faculty contact
  • 4- to 6-page reflection paper describing practicum experiences and how you were able to apply psychological principles to personal, social and organizational issues encountered during your placement
  • Completion of "Supervisor and Site Assessment" form
