Shenandoah University Acquires Former Winchester Armory

The building and grounds of the former Winchester Armory, located on Millwood Avenue, transitioned to Shenandoah University during a ceremony on Saturday, July 11.

Shenandoah University President Tracy Fitzsimmons accepts the key to the old National Guard armory building from Lt. Col. William Zana, battalion commander of the 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry.

The festive ceremony honored the historical heritage of the armory, its units, and most importantly, the men and women who have passed through its doors to serve over the past 60 years. In remembrance of the community dances and socials that were a hallmark of the armory in the 1940s, the celebration featured big-band, swing-style music and dancing, light refreshments and historical items of interest, all focused around area veterans and current and past unit members.
