An outgrowth of an amputee support group with which she volunteered in Knoxville, Tenn., Missy Wolff-Burke's summer camp for pediatric amputees has grown to include an average of 30 campers from 12 states, 15 volunteers and a waiting list.
Started in 1995, the camp provides a common ground where children can learn to say, "I'm not unusual; I'm me," according to Wolff-Burke, an orthopedic physical therapist and associate professor of physical therapy at Shenandoah.
The camp environment is challenging, but Wolff-Burke knows the positive impact it has on the campers; one of her first-year campers has gone on to participate in the Para Olympics.
